A Second Growing Issue on Labor Talks With Unions

In its partnership with the National Association of Manufacturers, the Metal Treating Institute likes to ensure it is keeping members up to speed on issues that could have a major impact (positive or negative) on your businesses so you can respond to your legislators in a timely fashion. Within Congress, the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) was introduced and passed the House and now awaits the Senate for action. EFCA would deny employees the right to a secret ballot election when deciding whether to join a union. Instead, individual signatures would be collected on cards in front of union organizers and fellow employees, hence the term “card check.” NAM's President, John Engler, recently sent to MTI this update that you should be aware of:

The NAM is a member of the Management Committee of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW), a broad-based coalition of business organizations and companies dedicated to defeating the Employee Free Choice Act. NAM and the CDW were instrumental in educating senators who voted against the card check bill in late June of 2007, but the fight is not over.

There is a strong possibility that EFCA could be reintroduced in Congress this year. We are working on a comprehensive strategy to educate voters and have developed a national advertising campaign reinforcing the need to protect private ballots for employees. You may view our first ad at: http://www.myprivateballot.com/. This ad ran extensively last month on most of the major news stations (CNN, Fox News, etc.) and we hope to increase its airplay – and expand it. Please feel free to share the ad with your members as well – we want to spread this message far and wide!

If you have any specific questions please don’t hesitate to contact Jeri Gillespie, the NAM’s Vice President of Human Resources Policy (202/637-3127; jgillespie@nam.org).

MTI appreciates your support and action when called upon. It is through our combined voice that positive change can be made in the legislative process.
