First ever Danieli Micromill started up at CMC Arizona
Wednesday, 10 Feb 2010CMC Steel Arizona in Mesa has realized its vision with the new generation of Danieli of continuous casting rolling, compact, micro mills.
CMC plant start up, which occurred slightly over one year from groundbreaking, is a remarkable technology milestone in production of commercial steel long products.
CMC Micro mill has a rated capacity of 300,000 short tonnes per annum of 12mm to 36mm rebar and Y sections although it's capable to produce bigger sizes up to 57mm bar. The mill makes use mainly of local scrap and supplies CMC's local fabrication shops as well as the Southwest market.
Characterized by single strand continuous casting rolling process featuring ultra high speed PowerMould caster, in line bar quenching and tempering and direct rolling bundling system organized in an extremely compact layout, the mill produces quality products at very competitive costs.
The plant, which does not include a billet reheat furnace, has been nicknamed by CMC's operators the house of the world longest billet. Still from CMC own words the bundling system produces bundles of the highest quality ever seen. When the fabricators clip the ties, the steel rolls out in perfect symmetry and doesn't t roll out like spaghetti, saving time for rebar detailers.
The acceptance testing phase is about to be complete. The learning curve is expected to be completed by early summer of 2010 as the mill staffing is completed and full hours of operation are achieved.
CMC completes the range of Danieli minimills and is designed to be competitive in transformation costs even for productions from 100,000 to 350,000 to 500,000 tonnes per annum.
Danieli is world leader in the design and turnkey construction of minimills up to 3,000,000 tonnes per annum and has supplied the 65% of the minimills during last 50 years, 80% during last decade.
