ArcelorMittal to put portion of $138 million investment in local facilities
ArcelorMittal facilities in East Chicago and Burns Harbor are going to receive a chunk of $138 million in planned capital investments, the steelmaker said Wednesday.
ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor will receive an upgrade to its 84-inch hot strip mill and ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor will add components to its 160-inch plate mill.
The steelmaker also is purchasing two new haul trucks at a mining operation in Minnesota that is a joint venture involving ArcelorMittal, U.S. Steel Corp. and Cliffs Natural Resources.
Michael Rippey, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal USA, said in a statement, "These projects will improve the competitive position of ArcelorMittal USA by improving product quality and growing our leadership position in key markets.
"This marks a significant investment in our USA operations, further exemplifying our commitment to the revitalization of American manufacturing and production of safe, sustainable steel."
The exact dollar share of each project wasn't revealed.
A company spokeswoman said it was too early to discuss when the work would take place or if employment at the facilities would increase as a result of the investments.
