SMS Demag to Supply Ladle Furnace

Nucor Steel has ordered a second ladle furnace and automation package from SMS Demag. The new unit, which will be installed at Nucor’s Tuscaloosa, Ala., plant, will have a single treatment position to process 150-ton heats. The project also includes an upgrade to the Level 1, 1.5 and 2 systems for the existing ladle furnace, which was also installed by SMS Demag.

Steel Dynamics has contracted SMS Demag to upgrade the bloom caster at the company’s Pittsboro, Ind., facility for the production of larger section sizes. SMS Demag’s scope of supply includes the provision of new X-Cast mold assemblies including coppers, segment zeros, new soft-reduction units, withdrawal and run-out guides, dummy-bar equipment and maintenance stands.
